EU Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.

“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in condemning the move.

The restrictions were enacted this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to control inflammatory language and disinformation.

This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.
