According to a new book, though, that title belongs to the automated timber mill conceived through Dutchman Cornelis Corneliszoon in 1593.
“Before mechanised cutting, building a simple trading ship required approximately 10 sawyers working over 90 days,” writes Jaime Dávila. “Using wind-powered sawmills, the same amount of processed timber could be produced within a week.”
Thanks to this speedy automated saw, that turned timber into boards using almost no manual labor, Dutch builders could build vessels more quickly compared to any other nation, which unleashed one hundred years of Dutch naval, economic as well as cultural supremacy in Europe and the world.

The inventor's lumber mill, contends Dávila, represented “mankind’s first authentic factory apparatus.” A windmill turned a gear.
